2016 Alumni Awards: Matthew Groenewold, SPHIS

You can make the case for him being the very
first graduate of the school, and so i think that is a great way to start a conversation
about alumni, where they’ve, where have they been from the beginning? and the thing that
was interesting about him and his relationship with the school is he actually joined our
team before we were a school, it was, we all, the school of public health emerged from the
school of medicine which is not unlike what happened with some other places and so it
all came out of medicine. and he was in a clinical investigation and
sciences program that was in the preventive medicine group at the medical school and that
was the year that we were transitioning into building the public health school, so he moved
over with us. Matt began right after highschool entering
the coast guard and through determination of that capacity, and for there after found,
service in the middle east in the dessert storm operation and received the combination
medal for his service and he found there after he wanted to get into the health care arena
and became a emergency medical technician, paramedic. Gradually moved into health department activities
and decided that he needed additional training beyond that to reach his maximum potential
and enrolled here at the school of public health and information sciences and got both
a masters and a PHD that allowed him to show a new level of expertise the he applied very
quickly, he has worked in the public health service, worked at the state level, worked
local health department, so he has worked all 3 levels of public health but hes also
engaged in academic pursuits, hes taught courses here, guest lectures, hes done scholarly product
related to some of the work hes done, hes done field based research, hes done bench
based research. Matt, he presents the complete package, he
is a scientist i think at heart, he is a servant, public servant, hes an educator, and hes very
selfless individual. Congratulations to the Dr. Lutenist Commander
Matt Groenewold we are very excited to have you represent the alumni awards and were looking
forward to working with you down the road. Its truly and honor to be named the 2016 alumni
fellow of the University of Louisville school of public health and information sciences. I wasn’t born here but my family and i have
lived here for the past 18 years and Im proud to call Louisville my adopted home town. My association with Louisville’s signature
university as a student, an adjunct faculty member, and as an alumni-st, I’ve always been
a major source of that sense of pride. The practice of public health, is ultimately
about improving people’s lives and making the communities they live in and work in safer
and healthier. Im grateful to the University of Louisville
outstanding education I received and for the opportunity thats its afforded me to work
in such a rewarding field. I would like to thank Dean and the entire
faculty of the school of public health and information sciences for the honor of this

the school of public health community, enriches my career and improves my practice. Finally, I’d also like to recognize all of
my fellow graduates of the University of Louisville school of public health and information sciences
