6.5 – Edward Gomez, Medal of Honor Recipient

Hi, I’m Azcia Fleming and it’s time to wrap up Heroes & Leaders week on Now You Know Nebraska! (music) This week was all about Heroes & Leaders, and today we recognize Medal of Honor winners from our state. The Medal of Honor is the United States highest military honor, awarded for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty. 29 people born or raised in Nebraska have been given the honor since the Civil War. One of these heroes was U.S. Marine Corp private first class Edward Gomez of Omaha. He joined the Marines at age 17 and served in the Korean War. In September of 1951, Gomez saved his Marine machine gun team by grabbing a grenade and jumping into a trench with it, sacrificing his own life to save his team President Harry Truman awarded him the Medal of Honor, he is one of 43 Hispanic Americans to
receive this honor. Thank you for joining me this week on Now You Know Nebraska! (music)
