Baker County holds Lonzie Barton vigil

AFTER 19 INCHES OF SNOW HAS FALLEN. THAT’S AHEAD AT 10:15. A COUPLE DOZEN CANDLES LIT IN MEMORY OF LONZIE BARTON, TO REMEMBER THE TODDLER THAT HAS TOUCHED MANY HEARTS OVER THE PAST SIX MONTHS. HEATHER LEE ATTENDED THE VIGIL THIS EVENING. Reporter: A SINGLE WAX CANDLE LEANT ITS FLAME TO ANOTHER. AS THE GESTURE GREW, AN ENTIRE ROOM STARTED GLOWING ORANGE. I HAVE THREE BABIES, SO IT REALLY HITS HOME, ESPECIALLY TO A PARENT, BUT, YOU KNOW, TO EVERYBODY. Reporter: WHICH MAY EXPLAIN THE TURNOUT. DOZENS OF PEOPLE SHOWING UP TO REMEMBER LONZIE, THE BLUE EYED BOY FROM BAKER COUNTY. I DON’T KNOW A PERSON THAT CAN WALK AWAY FROM THAT WITHOUT ANY EMOTION, YOU KNOW. I MEAN, WHETHER YOU HAVE CHILDREN OR NOT. I’VE SEEN A LOT OF THE SEARCH TEAM. THERE WERE SINGLE LADIES, DIDN’T HAVE ANY KIDS AND THEY WERE JUST WANT TOGETHER GET INVOLVED. SO, YEAH, I THINK IT TOUCHES EVERYBODY IN SOME WAY. Reporter: MUSIC FILLED THE AIR. PARENTS HELD THEIR KIDS CLOSE AS THEY WERE REMINDED WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT. YOU BECOME VERY CLOSE TO THEM. AND YOU DON’T KNOW HIM FROM NO WHERE. BUT YOU WOULD WANT SOMEONE TO DO THE SAME IF IT WAS YOUR CHILD. DEFINITELY. ALTZ HARD AS IT IS TO ACCEPT, WE’LL PROBABLY NEVER KNOW WHY, REALLY. Reporter: ALTHOUGH EVERYONE WANTS TO DO THIS FOR THE TODDLER, TONIGHT WAS FOR REMEMBERING AND THE LIGHTS KEPT ON FOR LONZIE CAN NOW BE BLOWN OUT. LIKE THE PASTOR SAID, LET HIM BE OUR SHINING LIGHT NOW. GO OUT AND DO THINGS IN HIS NAME. Reporter: AS THESE WERE SOME OF HIS THINGS AT THE MEMORIAL. THIS IS ACTUALLY A PICTURE, A COLLAGE OF LONZIE BARTON. AND THEN YOU ALSO CAN SEE THIS, THIS IS ONE OF THE FLOWERS THAT THEY HAD OUT. AND THEY HAD A LITTLE POEM ATTACHED TO IT LIKE THIS. IT WAS REALLY A BEAUTIFUL SERVICE. I DID SPEAK WITH JOEY DODSON, HE’S FROM THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE. EACH HAS BEEN IN TOUCH WITH FAMILY MEMBERS. THEY ARE WORKING ON FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS. OF COURSE ONCE THE MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE IDENTIFIES THOSE REMAINS AS BELONGING TO LONZIE BARTON, THAT’S WHEN THAT PROCESS CAN REALLY BEGIN. AND OF COURSE HE SAYS THAT WILL HAPPEN IN BAKER COUNTY.
