Benessere animale in Europa. Andriukaitis on EU animal welfare strategy

Animal welfare issues are very high
on European Union agenda. We were able to launch and introduce a fully
workable animal welfare strategy. Now we have in our hands all decisions which
should be translated in to national standards and all operators should now follow our guidelines
on pig welfare, live animal transport issues, on broiler welfare, … Also we established
animal welfare platform where we invited 76 different operators, half of them from NGO’s,
half of them from industry and science experts. We’re now discussing very sensitive topics
about tail docking, pig castration, small animals welfare, including rabbits, … Also we’ve adopted a lot of new laws: veterinary law and medicated feed law
allow us to introduce much stricter regulation of use of antibiotics in animal husbandry and gives possibilities to combine
high animal welfare standards and use of antibiotics. Speaking about possibilities to translate
in to practice animal welfare scientific evidence we established now animal welfare reference centers which can assess situations, provide practical advice to farmers and operators and also learn from different examples what can we do more to improve animal welfare standards and those topics like pig tail docking or pig castration now are under discussions of
different working groups providing much more instruments now to avoid tail docking and to reduce
pig castration not using anesthesia we need to move forward
introducing more anesthesia in this field Also we are asking science to advise us
how can we use different types of vaccinations addressing animal welfare issues
