Candle of Hope ceremony at the Irish Cancer Society Relay For Life

Candle of Hope ceremony at the Irish Cancer Society Relay For Life

The Candle of Hope ceremony or the Luminaria
is the beautiful part of Relay. It’s very delicate, very soft, each candle
represents a person or a journey or a moment in life. Myself and my husband Alan, were just married
and were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Amy was her name. Amy was diagnosed with a tumour which was
inoperable so I suppose our journey we knew would’ve been short. We have 2 children, myself and Alan now at
home, blessed with 2 others after losing our very precious Amy, Darragh is 8 and Ríonach is
6. They come to Relay every year and they come
with the warm purpose of remembering their sister. They put so much work all week into their
creation, which is the candle bag, for their sister, and they decorate it really specially
with momentos and things that remember the stories of Amy and they place them then with
all the other candles and they stand throughout the ceremony with their sister, because they
talk about the candle like Amy is there with them, and it’s so comforting and so moving.
