Colon cancer rising in young people

for the American Cancer Society estimates that more than a hundred and one thousand people will get colon cancer this year the recommendation is for people to get colonoscopies at forty five but as health reporter Haley Hernandez explains this morning more young people need to know the symptoms Haley good morning exactly because you know what thanks to more people getting colonoscopies the rate of colon cancer is actually going down except in the younger age group doctors say colon cancer in young people is rising and I do mean young Brittany Dodson was diagnosed with colon cancer at just 26 years old and doctors think her tumor began forming when she was much younger I was healthy young and fit I mean how could I get this why oncologist with Memorial Hermann and UT Health says young people are not immune from cancer but their symptoms are different if you feel extremely fatigued or pale need to check your blood count to see if you’re anemic because a lot of time an emic the blood must reduce in somewhere causing anemic and also have alternated with constipation and diarrhea could be a sign of the rectal cancer or colorectal cancer brittany thought her abdominal pain and bleeding could be from diet or hemorrhoids I sleep habits my exercise habits everything I was doing that I thought would work was not working at all luckily she didn’t procrastinate taking her complaints to a doctor the first one who heard her symptoms sent her straight to get a colonoscopy where oncologist quickly got her into chemo then surgery and long story short she got the ending she prayed for I’m proud to be a survivor at such a young age and that’s that’s the key that’s why I do what I do as an advocate for cancer survivors as soon as a lot of people don’t get the chance and so I’m very well very lucky and blessed ones to be a survivor she’s young but she has a great attitude and now she says take the job date the person go on a trip but get a colonoscopy she’s now 29 and gets a colonoscopy every year to make sure that her cancer has not returned of course like everyone she admits the prep is not fun but she says she can’t complain because she knows those colonoscopies are life State
