THE GUY WHO WAS FIRED AT THE END THE GUY WHO WAS FIRED AT THE END OF THE SATURDAY NIGHT MASSACRE? OF THE SATURDAY NIGHT MASSACRE? WELL, TURNS OUT AFTER NIXON WELL, TURNS OUT AFTER NIXON FIRED HIM, HE LANDED AT A GOOD FIRED HIM, HE LANDED AT A GOOD GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION CALLED GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION CALLED COMMON CAUSE. COMMON CAUSE. AND AT COMMON CAUSE, JUST TEN AND AT COMMON CAUSE, JUST TEN YEARS AFTER NIXON RESIGNED IN YEARS AFTER NIXON RESIGNED IN THE YEAR 1984, COMMON CAUSE, THE YEAR 1984, COMMON CAUSE, UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF WATERGATE SPECIAL PROSECUTOR, WATERGATE SPECIAL PROSECUTOR, ARCHIBALD COX, THEY DID ARCHIBALD COX, THEY DID SOMETHING THEY HAD NEVER DONE SOMETHING THEY HAD NEVER DONE BEFORE. BEFORE. THEY ISSUED A PUBLIC REPORT AND THEY ISSUED A PUBLIC REPORT AND SENT A LETTER TO EVERY SINGLE SENT A LETTER TO EVERY SINGLE UNITED STATES SENATOR, URGEING, UNITED STATES SENATOR, URGEING, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, THAT A FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, THAT A NOMINEE FOR A CABINET POSITION NOMINEE FOR A CABINET POSITION BE REJECTED BY THE SENATE. BE REJECTED BY THE SENATE. COMMON CAUSE HAD NEVER DONE COMMON CAUSE HAD NEVER DONE SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE, BUT SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE, BUT THEY DECIDED THAT THIS THEY DECIDED THAT THIS PARTICULAR NOMINEE WAS SO BAD, PARTICULAR NOMINEE WAS SO BAD, SO DANGEROUS, HAD SUCH A SO DANGEROUS, HAD SUCH A TERRIBLE RECORD, PARTICULARLY TERRIBLE RECORD, PARTICULARLY WHEN IT CAME TO ETHICAL ISSUES WHEN IT CAME TO ETHICAL ISSUES AND CORRUPTION ISSUES, THAT THEY AND CORRUPTION ISSUES, THAT THEY JUST DECIDED THEY HAD TO TAKE A JUST DECIDED THEY HAD TO TAKE A STAND. SENATORS, SAY “NO” TO THIS GUY. WE’VE NEVER SAID THIS BEFORE WE’VE NEVER SAID THIS BEFORE ABOUT A CABINET OFFICIAL, BUT ABOUT A CABINET OFFICIAL, BUT THIS ONE, DO NOT LET THIS ONE BE THIS ONE, DO NOT LET THIS ONE BE CONFIRMED. CONFIRMED. THAT NOMINEE THEY WERE SO THAT NOMINEE THEY WERE SO OPPOSED TO WAS NAMED ED MEESE. OPPOSED TO WAS NAMED ED MEESE. RONALD REAGAN HAD NOMINATED ED RONALD REAGAN HAD NOMINATED ED MEESE TO BECOME ATTORNEY MEESE TO BECOME ATTORNEY GENERAL. GENERAL. ED MEESE, BY THIS POINT, HAD ED MEESE, BY THIS POINT, HAD ALREADY HAD HIS SHARE OF ALREADY HAD HIS SHARE OF SCANDAL, EVEN BEFORE REAGAN SCANDAL, EVEN BEFORE REAGAN NOMINATED HIM TO BE ATTORNEY NOMINATED HIM TO BE ATTORNEY GENERAL. GENERAL. MEESE HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN THE MEESE HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN THE REAGAN CAMPAIGN WHEN REAGAN WON REAGAN CAMPAIGN WHEN REAGAN WON THE PRESIDENCY IN 1980, AND THE THE PRESIDENCY IN 1980, AND THE TRANSITION WAS UNDERWAY WITH THE TRANSITION WAS UNDERWAY WITH THE CARTER ADMINISTRATION GETTING CARTER ADMINISTRATION GETTING READY TO LEAVE AND THE REAGAN READY TO LEAVE AND THE REAGAN FOLKS GETTING READY TO COME IN FOLKS GETTING READY TO COME IN AND TAKE OVER, TO RUN THE AND TAKE OVER, TO RUN THE OPERATIONS OF THE REAGAN OPERATIONS OF THE REAGAN TRANSITION, THE INCOMING FOLKS TRANSITION, THE INCOMING FOLKS HAD SET UP A FINANCIAL ENTITY HAD SET UP A FINANCIAL ENTITY CALLED THE TRANSITION TRUST. CALLED THE TRANSITION TRUST. AND DURING THE TRANSITION, AND DURING THE TRANSITION, BEFORE THE START OF THE REAGAN BEFORE THE START OF THE REAGAN ADMINISTRATION, THAT TRANSITION ADMINISTRATION, THAT TRANSITION TRUST WROTE ED MEESE A $10,000 TRUST WROTE ED MEESE A $10,000 CHECK. CHECK. HMM, WHICH HE THEN PROMPTLY HMM, WHICH HE THEN PROMPTLY DEPOSITED IN HIS OWN PERSONAL DEPOSITED IN HIS OWN PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNT. BANK ACCOUNT. AND WHAT THE TRANSITION TRUST AND WHAT THE TRANSITION TRUST SAID THAT $10,000 WAS FOR WAS SAID THAT $10,000 WAS FOR WAS SOMETHING THEY RECORDED AS SOMETHING THEY RECORDED AS MOVING EXPENSES. MOVING EXPENSES. NOW, IT’S, OF COURSE, KOSHER FOR NOW, IT’S, OF COURSE, KOSHER FOR THERE TO BE A REASONABLY THERE TO BE A REASONABLY WELL-FUNDED EFFORT TO SET UP TO WELL-FUNDED EFFORT TO SET UP TO GIVE THEM OFFICE SPACE AND GET GIVE THEM OFFICE SPACE AND GET ALL THEIR DUCKS IN THE ROW AND ALL THEIR DUCKS IN THE ROW AND START DOING BRIEFINGS WITH THE START DOING BRIEFINGS WITH THE OUTGOING ADMINISTRATION. OUTGOING ADMINISTRATION. BUT $10,000 CHECKS FOR MOVING BUT $10,000 CHECKS FOR MOVING EXPENSES. EXPENSES. THAT’S NOT RIGHT. THAT’S NOT RIGHT. AND AFTER ED MEESE WAS INFORMED AND AFTER ED MEESE WAS INFORMED THAT HIM TAKING A $10,000 CHECK THAT HIM TAKING A $10,000 CHECK FROM THE TRANSITION FOR MOVING FROM THE TRANSITION FOR MOVING EXPENSES IS SOMETHING THAT WOULD EXPENSES IS SOMETHING THAT WOULD LIKELY BE CONSIDERED A CRIME, HE LIKELY BE CONSIDERED A CRIME, HE TOOK SWIFT ACTION. TOOK SWIFT ACTION. AND YOU MIGHT THINK IN SUCH A AND YOU MIGHT THINK IN SUCH A CIRCUMSTANCE, PARTICULARLY AT CIRCUMSTANCE, PARTICULARLY AT THE OUTSET OF A NEW THE OUTSET OF A NEW ADMINISTRATION THAT REALLY ADMINISTRATION THAT REALLY WASN’T LOOKING FOR SCANDAL RIGHT WASN’T LOOKING FOR SCANDAL RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE, YOU MIGHT THINK OUT OF THE GATE, YOU MIGHT THINK WHAT YOU WOULD DO IN SUCH A WHAT YOU WOULD DO IN SUCH A CIRCUMSTANCE, IF ONLY TO AVOID CIRCUMSTANCE, IF ONLY TO AVOID BEING A DISTRACTION AT THE START BEING A DISTRACTION AT THE START OF YOUR CANDIDATE’S NEW OF YOUR CANDIDATE’S NEW PRESIDENCY, YOU MIGHT THINK WHAT PRESIDENCY, YOU MIGHT THINK WHAT YOU WOULD DO IS RETURN THE YOU WOULD DO IS RETURN THE 10,000 BUCKS, RIGHT? 10,000 BUCKS, RIGHT? INSTEAD HAD HIM RECATEGORIZE IT. SO NOW THE $10,000 CHECK TO ED SO NOW THE $10,000 CHECK TO ED MEESE WOULD BE LISTED AS MEESE WOULD BE LISTED AS CONSULTING FEES. CONSULTING FEES. AND THEN HE JUST KEPT THE MONEY. AND THEN HE JUST KEPT THE MONEY. OH, IT CAN’T BE MOVING EXPENSES? OH, IT CAN’T BE MOVING EXPENSES? THAT’S A CRIME? THAT’S A CRIME? WELL, WE’LL JUST ERASE THAT AND WELL, WE’LL JUST ERASE THAT AND CALL IT SOMETHING ELSE. CALL IT SOMETHING ELSE. KA-CHING KA-CHING KA-CHING! KA-CHING! IRAN/CONTRA SCANDAL. SOME DAY, SOMEONE WILL MAKE AN SOME DAY, SOMEONE WILL MAKE AN AMAZING BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE ABOUT AMAZING BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE ABOUT HOW ASTONISH THE IRAN CONTRA HOW ASTONISH THE IRAN CONTRA SCANDAL WAS. 100 thoughts on “Ed Meese An Unlikely Recipient Of Honor …Except By Trump | Rachel Maddow | MSNBC

  1. innocent until proven guilty in a court of law not opinions. Go old man.get all the medals your canes can support.

  2. If justice existed in this God-forsaken world, Ed Meese would NOT be getting a medal of ANY kind, but would instead be bent over, tied to an iron bed, being buggered 23 hours a day by LARGE, IMPOLITE CONVICTS in some max security facility… if justice existed (sigh)…

  3. Honor does not exist in this white house….. in this White House Putin may recieve the medal as well. It doesn't have to make sense just FAVORS LOL joke and farce hahahahaha

  4. great to be in a room with people as corrupt as me,if not more.trump probaly took the medal, thats why he chose meese, one crook to another

  5. Meese the original traitorous criminal AG. Only in a traitorous criminals eye would he be deserving of anything but prison

  6. The GOPs sure are an historically criminal party. Last decent GOP was Eisenhower. After that they are mostly criminals and rougues. Of course the demon Trump would make it a point to honor one of the more famous made men so he could spit openly and viciously on our Democracy fir all to see. The man is a murderous traitor.

  7. Hey Trump is serious about being the corruption President. Now he can send Meese the professional to China and fabricate some dirt, ahh, mmmm I mean root out that corruption. Trump had heard that Reagan was successful in pulling off the same plot that he was caught doing in Ukraine. And from the looks of it it was the front end of the Iran Contra deal.

A very suspicious event occured involving the Hostages in Iran. The Iranians released the Hostages one minute after Reagan took his oath. Coincidence I think not.

Evedently the Iranians hated Carter so much for allowing the Sha of Iran into the US be treated for cancer. Who knew that Carter would inspire such angsst.

The Irainians are not that stupid to release the Hostages for nothing. I sure everyone has forgotten that the US and Iran where aliies for decades. And as allies they were sold decades worth of military equipment and needless to say that equipment will be in need of spare parts. Looks like a delema for both sides, the new Iranian religious based government can't be seen dealing with the proclaim Great Satan the United State. And the US can't be dealing with radical religious fanatics whom had held US citizens as hostages. So the angry Iranians focus on Carter would be the cover story.

Those Irainians showed Carter, apparently Carter being out of office was enough to return the hostages. It appears that the Gipper had a something arrange with the Iranians and his boy big Ed Meese Reagan's fixer most likely made something happen. I'm sure the Iran Contra affair had it's origins with a secret deal to release the Hostages for let's say military related parts to maintain their military equipment.

  8. GOP appears to have been historically corrupt. The entitlement mentality is rife among them and the belief that the law is for others not them. They are a disgrace and should all be voted out.

  9. I really wonder if Putin has something on Trump or Trump owes him a favor & is causing him to make a mockery of our Democracy. Otherwise he's lost it for the 92nd time. ~ 1000 DAYS OF SHAME IN THE USA!

  10. It seems like the system is primed for corruption when we allow government officials to profit financially from their decisions in office. Shouldn't somebody start a movement to pass a bill that requires all government officials to either divest from all investments in which their decisions would lead to conflicts of interests (like owning shares in a defense contractor before voting for war, etc.) or making it so law makers/presidents/judges/heads of departments like the FDA, FCC, EPA, etc. would abstain from making any decisions or trying to influence the decisions of others when they own stakes in companies that may profit from their input?

Ed Meese seems pretty slimy, btw. Makes you wonder about Reagan, and after hearing that racist call to Nixon he made, I have no respect left for him. Trump is the slimiest of all slimeballs though – too bad Mucinex won't work on him.

  11. Youโ€™re so brilliant Rachel and you make it all so understandable in this crazy mad world we live in… Specially all of the very important historicโ€™s woven into your narrative that bring to the forefront of our mindโ€™s eyes how the corrupt oneโ€™s are opening the same bloody envelope over and over for their own personal gain – their lack of ethics, morality, etc … Your uber intelligent perspective is amazingly urgent for us all to hear, to know, to remember, and do something about; for instance; electing moral people into government, making sure your voice is heard around the world and on and on … What would we do without your voice!? God Bless you soooooooo much!!! P.S. The Ed Meese episode is particularly brilliant and you are so funny! VIVA Rachel! VIVA TRMS!!!

  12. Things are just getting more and more absurd by the minute. If it wasn't so disgusting it might be funny. I don't remember if Rachel said where this idea came from. Why in the world would they give this cheater a medal?! I can see somebody getting $10,000 for moving expenses. But if under the circumstances it was considered illegal, then his idea to change the description of the $10k was completely fraudulent!

How do people like this wind up at the highest level in our justice system, where they have serious responsibilities and get paid an above average salary? Most people have been fired from jobs in spite of their desire to do well, be honest and hard-working. People lose jobs for being late, for having to take a lot time off for illness or for ordinary issues that have nothing to do with dishonesty.

But when you compare those reasons with the types of intentional dishonesty that so many with our government officials get away with, it is OUTRAGEOUS and disgraceful.

I'm beginning to see why congresspeople are afraid to rock the boat. They seem to have pretty cushy jobs and make VERY good money compared to most people. So I think their fear of acting aggressively when it's called for is out of fear of jeopardizing their quality of life. It's not a partisan issue for most of them. I believe it really comes down to personal selfishness, like Trump. But, not to the degree that Trump is openly revealing. No matter what I don't feel that many of our elected federal officials care about us sufficiently. It's sad and eye-opening.

  13. Great episode Rachel! Any discussion of Iran-Contra is appreciated. So, what have we learned from history, re: presidential powers then and now? Republicans have a belief that the executive powers are supreme (but only when they are in power). This from someone who lived through Reaganomics, and survived the trickle-down economy. I was also a fresh Vietnam Veteran at the time, who protested for justice in Iran-Contra-gate, and was spat on while in uniform doing so many times. All for what? It's a crying shame we have had decades of political corruption with little change for the better.

  14. America, where one career criminal can award the Medal of Freedom to another career criminal… You might think something like that could only happen in a Dictatorship, but you would be wrong….

  15. Rachel Maddow, thanks again for this background check information as to Ed Needed and Trump TIMELY decision to Honor him at the White House. Just to recall the SWAMP is always filled with Creatures just as CORRUPT as TRUMP. The Republician are sure digging into their BLACK BOOK to bring in more of the same DEVILS OF THE TRUMP CULT. CAN'T MAJE THESE THINGS UP. WAKE UP AMERICA. ALL ABOUT DISTRACTION AND TO HONOR THE BAD CORRUPT MEN INTO THE TRUMP UNIVERSITY OF CORRUPTION. WHITE PRIVILEGE. THE BROKEN JUSTICE SYSTEM. OMLY WOULD GET WORSE. TRUMP THE MAFIA GODFATHER & FAKE POTUS.

  16. History again and again show the US people how rotten the Republicans areโ€ผ๏ธ BUT for some reason you keep voting for them to run your country๐Ÿคฌ itโ€™s like a merry go rounded the Dems get in save the country like President Obama. Then you vote GOP back in and down the hole you go again โ€ผ๏ธ WTF is wrong with you NO MEMORY๐Ÿคฌ

  17. That's Spitting Image squared.
Pornstar #1 and the guardian of virgin gooleys. Trump makes all comedy show presenters redundant, really!

  18. Two criminal scoundrels. I hope when a new President gets in they rescind that award , because it has devalued and tarnished the award .

  19. One of the WORST (U. S.) Attorneys General โ€“ EVER. it is no wonder that Mr. Meese IS on par with the likes of both Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Barr.

  20. I saw Regan headed to the WH in 1980 and I sold everything I owned and headed for Europe for two years. One of the best moves I ever made. Wish I could repeat it today.

  21. Isn't it ironic…don't ya think? Imagine BoofheadBarr getting a medal in years to come, lol lol lol. Do they give medals in jail?

  22. They say history repeats….oh PLEASE…let's hope he copies Nixon.
#TrumpRetireNow and we won't jail your entire family!

  23. So basically every Republican since Nixon, which is basically when the KKK switched sides and started supporting them, has been corrupt

  24. This Trump presidency is like a never ending nightmare. If the American people ever elect a Republican again for Presidency, I will realise that something is really wrong with the world and it should perish ASAP.

  25. The same people who Voted for(Mr Grab'em)don't think because you voted for him, that he's not gonna take your benefits away, how stupid can y'all be that's because he's taking all our Healthcare,Food programs and Social Security away so at the end of the day,we're all Screwed.

  26. i remember those days, the cartoons about meese, staying glued to the tv watching the iran-contra trials, the fury we all felt when north skated free. now he gets a medal…only trumputin would approve of and award it to him…

  27. The elites running this country sure do a great job rewarding the Hypocrites at best who speak with a forked tongue and are two-faced or criminals at worst. It's no wonder we cannot get any good people elected to congress or appointed to important positions who have some ethics about them and can stand tall. The propaganda machine is oiled well and the emperor however really is naked but the sheeples refuse to see it and their blinders are so thick it's a wonder they can even walk of course they're all holding hands in tribal fashion because they don't have a spine or independent brain.

  28. Do not for a moment believe that this woman knows what is going on in the halls of power. She is the best paid history teacher ever. The corruption in USA is rampant and have goon on since before the founding of the nation.

  29. Ed Meese?! Holy crap! I thought that stupid old dinosaur from the failed Ronnie Raygun regime died years ago ha ha!

  31. My conservative father, in a rest home, has been sending money to Meese who heads some right wing group.. I can't stop it either. (My inheritance)

  32. THIS my friends, is REAL NEWS. When you see something so random today, like Trump honoring Ed Meese, in the middle of a massive impeachment inquiry, and think…"hmm, that's a bit odd" …as it seems so out of left field. Then you watch Rachel break it down and realize "Um… no, it's definitely not random". It's just more corruption. Trump's "out-of-the-blue" honoring of the aged and corrupt Ed Meese is a direct signal to Bill Bar (Trump's current and corrupt AG) to say "look! Ed Meese did all this corrupt stuff, and he never went to jail and I'm honoring him, so YOU SHOULD DO THE SAME FOR ME and stick by me through all this". And NOW it makes total sense. And THAT my friends is why we love Rachel Maddow and why her long-form reporting is so crucial to understanding the dark underbelly of American politics and how searingly corrupt the Trump Administration is.

Today, we are living through a major saga of American history that will be read and studied by school kids, college students, and legal scholars for centuries to come. About how American democracy was almost destroyed by a Hitler-like populist figure who tried to anoint himself King and was finally buried in disgrace and corruption of his own making.

  33. Ed Meese is still here…interesting. And the individual occupying the White House dug him up, which is creepy, if not nightmarish. Furthermore as judges of honor, neither Mr. Meese nor Mr. Trump have any standing, so I take all this in with a snippet of arsenic. But this is the thing — and it's RIGHT-ON time — a quote from 1961's CATCH-22 by Joseph Heller: โ€œIt was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. Anybody could do it; it required no brains at all. It merely required no character.โ€ Citizens would do well to come to terms with the nature of the man who has become the GOPs lord and savior. WE THE PEOPLE must not let President Trump thwart America's ideals and the U.S. Constitution, which he pledged to protect, honor and defend. (KFB, 111019)

  34. For context, the same guy who criticized Miranda rights ("You have the right to remain silent," ect.) by saying people don't need Miranda because only guilty people get arrested, just got awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom by Donald Trump.

  35. Could be precedent for honoring the other criminal US attorney general: fred flint… I mean billy barr

Seriously, when trump is done and dusted, its probably best to knock down the White House and rebuild it. We will never get the stain and stench of corruption and criminality trump has brought with him, out of its walls…

  36. wow…. we really need to face our truth if we want to learn how to actually be a great nation. We could start with taking money out of politics and locking up the people who break the law and hurt others.

  37. WOW!!! BAR'S FACE SAYS IT ALL…HOW EXCITED!!! HE WILL ALSO GET A MEDAL OF TRUMP FOR GOING ALONG WITH BREAKING THE LAW!!!

  38. I look forward to Trump posthumously honouring John Wayne Gacey for his interest in teenage boys, and Jeffery Dalmer for his service to American cuisine.

  39. When I first saw this segment I thought Olโ€™ Bonespurs was handing out a Medal of Honour to some old veteran that had been overlooked. But upon listening to the story I was quite shocked but, given the Multi-Draft Dodgers usual questionable behaviour, I was not overly surprised.
Is it just my faulty chemo addled brain, or is impeachment the (almost) sole purview of Republican Presidents? At the moment I can only recall Bill Clinton as being the lone Democratic President that barely dodged the bullet. It appears, however, that the Republicans havenโ€™t done so well at avoiding such epic scandals that the average citizen (ie those that arenโ€™t rich/powerfully connected) would be gaoled for in very short order!

  40. I did not know that someone of such a lower caliber can be elected to lead such a great country. If Obama had been involved in ponography films there times, betrayed his country, bribed women to keep quiet. Would you have elected him ? or if you did would you leave him in office until term? Is that then democracy when others do not face justice at all!

  41. Geeeez, what a coincidence that the other times "we had it bad" in our history with corruption and abuse of public office, were during Republican administrations.

  42. In the end it shows that crime does pay – as long as you're doing it out of the WH. No prison sentence? I'd like to see somebody explaining this to all those people in jail for some ounces of Mariuana!

  43. So, what's the deal? The DOJ and the president are a black hole where they are above the law, or so they think? Disgusting.
