Govt announces overhaul of the welfare system

The findings of a report by the government’s welfare advisory
group have finally been released. As Eruera Rerekura reports,
increasing benefit payments and scrapping
discriminatory sanctions that cuts benefits to mothers who don’t declare the name
of the child’s father are some of the raft
of recommendations detailed in the report. The overall findings
of the report says there’s a need for a change
of culture so that people
are treated with respect. The chair of
the government’s advisory, former Children’s Commissioner
Cindy Kiro says the social welfare system
will no longer fail Maori children. However, the Government
has ignored pleas from experts to increase the benefit
and is instead making some tweaks. Giving dignity
to vulnerable families. Eruera Rerekura, Te Karere.
