Humane Society News Conference

ENERGY BUSINESS, COURTNEY, THANKS SO MUCH. MOMENTS AGO THE HOUSTON HUMANE SOCIETY ALONG WITH CRIME STOPPERS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS ANNOUNCED NEW PLANS AIMED AT ENDING THE ABUSE, NEGLECT, AND CRUEL TREATMENT OF HORSES. SPECIFICALLY, IN THE ACRES HOMES AND SURROUNDING AREAS. CHANNEL 2’S GIANNA CASERTA JUST GOT OUT OF THAT NEWS CONFERENCE. GIANNA, WHAT CAN YOU TELL US? Reporter: WELL, OFFICERS SAY ACRES HOMES IS AN AREA THAT’S HEAVILY POPULATED BY HORSES. SEVERAL PEOPLE OWN HORSES IN THIS AREA. AND I WANT TO GET TO SOME VIDEO BECAUSE THERE WAS A HORSE NAMED MONTE AND ABOUT A YEAR AGO, MONTE COLLAPSED AS SOMEONE WAS RIDING HIM DOWN WEST MONTGOMERY. THE HUMANE SOCIETY SAYS HE WAS MAL MALNOURISHED, ABOUT 250 POUNDS UNDERWEIGHT. HE EVENTUALLY DIED FROM HIS INJURIES. NOW A YEAR LATER, SIX GROUPS ARE COMING TOGETHER TO PUT AN END TO HORSE NEGLECT IN MONTE’S MEMORY. THE HOUSTON HUMANE SOCIETY, CRIMESTOPPERS, HPD NORTH DIVISION, HARRIS COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE, HARRIS COUNTY PRECINCT 5, AND HOUSTON PET SET HAVE ALL COME TOGETHER TO FORM MONTE’S TASK FORCE. THE TASK FORCE IS DEDICATED TO ENDING THE CRUEL TREATMENT OF HORSES IN THE ACRES HOMES AREA THROUGH EDUCATION AND ENFORCEMENT OF THE LAWS. A LOT OF THIS IS EDUCATION AND THAT’S ONE OF OUR PRIMARY GOALS, IS TO EDUCATE EVERYBODY ON WHAT IS PROPER ANIMAL CARE AND SPECIFICALLY HORSES, WHAT THEY NEED TO EAT, WHAT VACCINATIONS THEY NEED. MANY PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW THAT THEY HAVE TO HAVE THEIR TEETH FLOATED EVERY YEAR. SO THEY HAVE TO HAVE THEIR HOOVES TRIMMED. THERE ARE MANY THINGS SPECIFIC TO HORSES THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT REALIZE. AND WE’RE HERE TO MAKE THEM GOOD PET OWNERS. Reporter: AND ON JANUARY 30th THEY’LL BE HOLDING A LOW-COST CLINIC WHERE OWNERS CAN GET THEIR HORSES MICROCHIPPED FOR FREE. THAT IS A HUGE DEAL THAT. WAY YOU CAN MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH HORSE IS WHICH AND WHEN THEY’RE LOCATED IF THEY GET OUT OR ARE LOST. THAT WILL BE HELD AT THE NORTH DIVISION.
