A new local partnership is teaching kids how to properly take care of dogs. The Coulee Region Humane Society is partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater La Crosse to educate children about pet responsibility and good citizenship. The program at Northside Elementary in La Crosse is called ‘From Nose to Tail: Lessons to Inspire Care and Compassion for Dogs.’ The five week program is providing service learning activities for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade. The program was designed as part of the Humane Society of America’s ‘Stop Puppy Mills’ campaign. It all starts with children because one day those of us that are in positions where we can educate people and children about animal wellfare, we’re not going to be here anymore. The Humane Society teaches the kids what it looks like when a dog does and does not have their basic needs met through books and stories.
