Introduction to Western Civilization I

Welcome to the Modern States CLEP course in
Western Civilization I. Hello, my name is Dr. David D. Flaten. I am currently teaching Western Civilization
at Tompkins Cortland Community College, one of the 64 campuses of the State University
of New York system. Our goal for you in this series of lectures
is to better prepare you for success in the CLEP exam in Western Civilization I. These brief lectures, in combination with
your own hard work, with your readings, interactive materials and practice questions, are designed
to help put you in the best position to pass the exam. Make sure you feel you have mastery of each
section before you pass on to the next. These lectures are built with elements that
tie them to each other. In these six modules, we will explore the
changes in Western Civilization ranging from its origins in Asia and Africa through to
the era of 1650. The goal is that you will earn college credit
allowing you to progress into more sophisticated coursework. You will find it vital to watch the lectures
multiple times, engage with the recommended readings, and review all sample questions. I look forward to seeing you again as we tackle
the origins of Western Civilization in Module 1 as we look into early development.
