Leadership lived: Maddie Cullick

Leadership lived: Maddie Cullick

My name is Maddie Cullick. I’m a junior
elementary education and educational psychology major. I am involved in
several different organizations on campus. I am the president of the Legion
of Ladies on campus. I am a cheerleader on the UIS cheerleading team. I am on the
Executive Board for Dance Marathon where I’m the campus relations chair.
I am the honors program and I’m a peer tutor for the honors program, so I have
several different positions on campus. Tonight we were actually doing our
Christmas parties, so we are doing a Secret Santa gift exchange. The Legion of
Ladies was kind of an idea created by a few different girls last year and I was
approached this year and asked to become president. It was an organization on
campus that focuses on empowering women community service, friendship, bonding and
leadership. The Legion Ladies have been pretty active this semester. We have done
several different volunteering events as well as social events on campus. We helped
the Gamma Phi Omega at Mercy this semester we also did trick-or-treat for
canned goods as a group and we were the second highest and the number of pounds
of food raised we also co-hosted a Halloween party with Kickback Club and
we helped Phi Kappa Tau with their annual Heartland formal. I’ve been involved in cheer at UIS since my freshman year and I have loved ever
since. I have mostly done basing as a cheerleader and I’ve also just done
sidelines. We’ve worked to do competition in the past, so we’re still kind of
hoping you do that going forward in the future, but it’s just been a great
opportunity to get involved on campus. UIS overall has taught me a lot about
leadership. I’ve definitely learned how to become a leader because of UIS. I
think it’ll definitely help me in the future especially going into a teaching
role. I’ve definitely learned how to plan out what I’m going to say in front of
the group. I’ve definitely learned how to be a positive role model to the people
in the organization, or I hope so, and I think it’s definitely helped prepare me
it just in general how to make decisions and how to be a good leader. My UIS
experience overall has been life changing. I think it’s just been a very
great experience and I couldn’t have hoped for anything better.
