Lenoir County Child Welfare Case Study


The state standard is 95% but
you know with initiation you want to reach 100%. At one point we were 80% and 85% and you know
our standards have reached up to 97%. On a given day I think I could save probably
2-3.5 hrs per day using our new software. My cases are probably closing on average two
weeks earlier than what they would just because I’m not spending as much time trying to
hunt information that is somewhere in their file or somewhere in the investigation. A lot of the information i can go in from
even the assessors dictation and copy and edit
and paste it onto the forms when i am making my case decisions so it makes it a lot simpler. Sometimes the worker may come to me and say
Ok I just don’t think that these kids need to be in the home we have to make a safer
resource place. It helps when they can say ok this is what
I see i even had workers to face-time me from the
field which is very helpful. Because i can see first hand what they are
seeing. I have been able to speak to my supervisor
while being out in the field. This has given me
the opportunity to get some feedback about some things I may have concerns about that
i might be uncertain about. It prevents me
from having to make a second trip to the family which often frustrates the family. Just last week I had a social worker who was
on a home visit and she was recording the visit
and she wanted me to hear how argumentative these foster parents were with her. She said I’m not just telling you this I want
you to hear how the conversation went, so we were able to listen to that and process
that. i see it has helped to retain workers. We had a 73% turnover rate in 2006 and we
had to do something about that. Right now I think it might be somewhere like
17%. This system has a lot to do with why I am
here. I drive an hour and a half every day one way
to this job because I am aware that all of the surrounding counties where i live they
don’t have this system. I feel like I am providing quality services
to the families that we serve by spending more time with them. The stigma of what is presented on TV about
CPS, social workers just going in and stealing children from their families just to make
a profit is gone. We have that kind of relationship they are
more willing to engage in services to follow any safety or case plans that we put in place. Which ultimately impacts the safety of the
children. We feel more competent in what we are doing. We feel like we are being supported. That fact that we even have this system shows
that our managers team wants for us to succeed. They want for us to be doing a good job of
serving the families that we are working with. We are excited that someone was looking out
for our needs and putting something into place and listening to what we need to make our
jobs more efficient so we can spend our time with families. This has been life changing and you should
probably talk to your director or whoever you need to talk to about Northwoods being
implemented at your agency.
