Local War Heroes Honored In Greenup County


More local news now Today is National Medal of Honor Day. It’s a day dedicated to Medal of Honor Recipients. Today in Wurtland, Kentucky, community members and fifth grade students from Argillite Elementary and Grays Branch Elementary gathered to honor the two medal of honor recipients from Greenup County, Kentucky Ernie West and John Collier. West received his Medal of Honor for going above and beyond the call of duty in the Korean War by running back and forth to save his fellow comrades, while Collier gave the “We’ve got some real heroes out there put forth a lot of sacrifice. Most of these Medal of Honor recipients, they’re very humble about what they do. They’re good citizens, they give to their communities, they give to their country. They’re just willing to sacrifice any time and any place and it’s just awesome to be a part of it. Master Gunnery Sergeant Paul Sites says it is remarkable for two people, West Greenup County, knew each other, worked together, and fought in a war together.
