MAYOR TIM KELLER AND THE ANIMAL WELFARE DEPARTMENT ARE ADDRESSING THE ONGOING PROBLEMS PLAGUING THE DEPARTMENT. THE DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN CRITICIZED FOR A NUMBER OF THINGS INCLUDING ADOPTING OUT ANIMALS THAT HAD BEEN DEEMED DANGEROUS. TODAY THE MAYOR )S OFFICE HELD A PRESS CONFERENCE DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES ANIMAL WELFARE IS FACING, INCLUDING A BACKLOG OF CASES, LEAVING MANY ANIMALS LOCKED UP LONGER THAN THEY WOULD LIKE TO. ALSO…THE NUMBER OF ANIMALS THEY ARE HAVING TO PUT DOWN AND RECORD KEEPING. 1:16:40 when you have a situation where there is pressure for a no kill policy it can lead to folks massaging number lead to folks sending animals elsewhere inappropriately it can also lead to animals sitting here too long:58 THEIR MAIN PLAN OF ACTION IS TO RE- TRAIN STAFF ON POLICIES AND PROCEDURES TO GET THINGS DONE QUICKER. THEY ALSO HOPE TO HIRE MORE STAFF TO HELP WITH THE NUMBER OF CASES. MAYOR KELLER ALSO SAID THEY WILL IMPROVE THE SPAY AND NEUTER PROGRAM TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN AFFORD THE SERVICE, WHICH COULD CUT DOWN ON THE NUMBER OF PETS IN THE SHELTER.
