Medical Insight: NICU at Essentia Health-Fargo – Essentia Health

Nothing is more exciting than bringing your
brand-new baby home from the hospital. But for some parents, that milestone is delayed. For babies born prematurely or with medical
issues, a stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or NICU might be required. NICUs have typically been designed as an open
room with multiple isolettes all together in a small space. With a recent renovation, Essentia Health
used evidence-based design to change their NICU layout, making care better for babies
and their parents. This space is amazing, it’s absolutely amazing! The space Dr. Pawel Zieba, a neonatologist
at Essentia Health is describing is Essentia’s NICU on their Women’s & Children’s floor. The Essentia NICU dramatically improves the
patient experience by having each baby in his or her own private room which Dr. Zieba
says gives greater individualized care for baby and more privacy and focus on the family’s
needs. Much, much better patient care. It is definitely much better for the babies,
for the parents, for the families. The care that we can provide is definitely
superior than in just one open field. Essentia Health Women’s and Children’s Nursing
Director Kecia Lund says the private rooms provide more space to care for babies and
offer the latest technology, allowing Essentia to ensure the healthiest start for their tiniest
patients. Cameras and monitors supply 24/7 secure supervision
from nurses and parents. They can have an app on their phone, an iPad
or computer so that they can open up that app and they can view their baby 24/7 from
home and it really does help decrease that anxiety. Dr. Zieba says the private room approach helps
medical staff provide more individualized care while in the NICU. The bottom line is, children get the best
possible start in life. We are talking about the entire life ahead
of babies. The first day of life is the most important
day of life. The first week of life is the most important
week of life. We’re talking about care which translates
into the entire future of children and adults for the next 100 years. With this Essentia Health Medical Insight,
I’m Tracy Briggs.
