MHU Horse Behavior and Welfare Online Course Introduction

Hi, my name is Camie Heleski and I will be
your lead instructor for this course. I’ve been employed at Michigan State University
since 1991 and my primary responsibility is to coordinate the two-year horse management
program. In 2004, I completed my PhD in animal behavior and welfare and since that time,
I have been actively working to expand my opportunities to research and teach about
horse behavior and welfare. In many ways, I consider that I have been a student of horse
behavior since I was a little kid. I was always intrigued to try and figure out what horses
were thinking and how training could be conducted in a way that seemed fair to the horse. I
have always enjoyed horse competitions from showing extensively as a kid to now helping
coach my daughter and other students in showing dressage horses. In this course, I hope to
share some of my insights with you and hopefully help you understand more about how horses
behave and how we can optimize our relationship with horses.
