AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY BELIEVES EVERYONE DESERVES EQUAL ACCESS TO CANCER EDUCATION, SCREENING, TREATMENT AND FOLLOW-UP CARE, EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR BUT ESPECIALLY DURING APRIL. THEY ARE WORKING TO RAISE AWARENESS OF CANCER AMONG MINORITIES AND REDUCTION OF — RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL MINORITY CANCER AWARENESS WEEK . JESSICA POFF JOINS US WITH MORE VITAL, LIFE-SAVING INFORMATION. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. THANKS FOR HAVING US BACK. I WILL YOU TAKE OFF ON THIS IT IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT SUBJECT. PEOPLE, NO MATTER WHAT NEED TO GET TESTED AND TESTED EARLY. IT IS, AND IT’S SOMETHING THAT AFFECTS EVERY GENDER, EVERY RACE, EVERY GROUP OF PEOPLE IN EVERY AGE. WE AS A PEOPLE CAN BE AFRAID OF SCREENINGS, EVEN MY OWN FAMILY GETS AFRAID, I DON’T WANT TO SEE WHAT THE DOCTOR HAS TO TELL ME. BUT ALSO LACK OF ACCESS TO CARE, WE ARE BLESSED IN THE TRI- CITIES TO HAVE AMAZING FACILITIES IN GREAT LOCATIONS, HEALTH CLINICS AND LOCATIONS BUT EVEN WITH THOSE IN PLACE PEOPLE AREN’T GETTING SCREENINGS THEY NEED. ONE THING WE ARE TRYING TO DO IS MAKE SURE PEOPLE KNOW, IF YOU HAVE A FAMILY HISTORY, IF YOU’RE NOTICING A SYMPTOM THAT DOESN’T FEEL RIGHT, TALK TO A DOCTOR, IF YOU’RE WORRIED OF FINDING A DOCTOR, THAT YOU ARE AFRAID WON’T AGREE WITH YOUR LIFESTYLE OR FAMILY BACKGROUND, WE COULD HELP YOU FIND A FIT FOR YOU, WE ARE ALL ABOUT SAVING LIVES, UNTIL WE TAKE CONTROL OF HER OWN HEALTH WE WON’T DO A LOT OF DIFFERENCE, WE NEED TO TAKE BETTER CARE OF OURSELVES. AND ALSO COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. IT KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES, AND THE EARLIER YOU DETECTED THE BETTER YOU ARE. EVERY RACIAL GROUP OF PEOPLE, COLORECTAL IS IN THE TOP 2 OR 3 CANCERS. ASIAN AMERICANS ARE THE NUMBER 1 DIAGNOSED WITH IT, NATIVE AMERICANS AS WELL. AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN HAVE A HIGH INCREASE RATE OF COLORECTAL CANCER. COLORECTAL CANCER IT’S SCARY BUT ALSO ONE OF THOSE, IF IT’S CAUGHT EARLY IT’S TREATABLE, AND IT’S CAUGHT IN COLONOSCOPIES OR OTHER TESTS. WE ARE WORKING HARD TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE ACCESS TO THOSE TESTS. THERE ARE ACTION NETWORK, AND ON THE NATIONAL LEVEL. ALSO LOCALLY. PEOPLE PUT BARRIERS IN FRONT OF THEMSELVES. THEY DON’T WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT IS, THEY SAY I DON’T HAVE TRANSPORTATION, OR THE MEANS, YOU ARE THERE. YOU ARE THERE TO HELP. WE ARE THERE 24 HOURS A DAY. PEOPLE SAY THAT ALL THE TIME BUT TRUTHFULLY WE HAVE PEOPLE AVAILABLE 24 HOURS A DAY YOU CAN CALL AND SAY YOU KNOW WHAT I’VE A FRIEND OR MY BROTHER OR DAD OR SISTER AND THEY ARE HAVING SYMPTOMS. YOU CAN SAY WHERE CAN I GO. A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE OUR HEALTH DEPARTMENT HAS FREE PAP SMEARS AND MAMMOGRAM CHECKS FOR THOSE WITH A LACK OF INSURANCE OR UNDERINSURED AND THAT IS DUE TO THE ADVOCACY EFFORTS WE DO. WE HAVE ADVOCATES AT THE 100 NUMBER THAT WILL HELP YOU, HELP YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY MAKE SURE IT’S GETTING COVERED. DON’T JUST TAKE IT, GO FOR IT. DON’T BE EASY ABOUT IT. BE AGGRESSIVE.
