National Stair Climb honoring fallen firefighters on 9/11 to be held Saturday


EXPLAIN THE IMPACT 9/11 HAD ON THEIR LIVES AND CAREERS… CIARA: A LOCAL FIREFIGHTER AND HER TEAM ARE PREPARING FOR THEIR FIFTH YEAR “CLIMBING FOR A CAUSE.” 22NEWS REPORTER KATRINA KINCADE IS AT OUR FRANKLIN COUNTY BUREAU WITH THE REASON BEHIND THEIR MISSION. KATRINA KINCADE: FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS, A CONWAY WOMAN CLIMBED 110 STORIES AT THE NATIONAL “STAIR CLIMB FOR FALLEN SOLDIERS.” ON SUNDAY, HER TEAM WILL MOUNT THEIR FIFTH CLIMB. 110 STORIES – THATS HOW MANY FLIGHTS FIREFIGHTERS AND FIRST RESPONDERS CLIMBED IN THE TWIN TOWERS ON 9-11. “REMEMBERING THAT THERE WERE SO MANY FIREFIGHTERS KILLED ON 9/11 AND THE CLIMBS WERE ESTABLISHED TO REMEMBER THEM”. AND A CONWAY FIREFIGHTER IS HONORING THEIR MEMORY BY DOING THE SAME. “YOU GET A FEELING WHEN YOU THERE AND ITS SOMETHING YOU KNOW THAT YOURE DOING SOMETHING BIGGER YOURE PART OF SOMETHING MORE”. FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS GEMMA VANDERLAND AND HER TEAM “HILLTOWN 343” CLIMBED THE 110 STORIES AT THE NATIONAL “STAIR CLIMB FOR FALLEN SOLDIERS.” THE TEAM GREW EACH YEAR, RAISING MONEY FOR THE NATIONAL FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS FOUNDATION. “WHAT THEY DO FOR PEOPLE FOR PEOPLE FOR FAMILIES FOR CHILDREN WHOES PARENTS HAVE BEEN KILLED AND EVEN TRYING TO PREVENT LINE OF DUTY DEATHS IT JUST BROUGHT IT ALL TOGETHER”. THEY’VE RAISED MORE THAN 800 DOLLARS SO FAR. LAST YEAR GEMMA PLACED IN THE CLIMB’S TOP THREE FUNDRAISERS. “GEMMA AND HER TEAMS WEAR FULL GEAR LIKE THIS WHEN CLIMBING THAT CAN WEIGH FROM 60 TO 80 POUNDS”. WHILE HER TEAM’S NOT FROM NEW YORK, SHE SAID THE EXPERINECE MAKES THEM FEEL CLOSER TO THE 343 FIREFIGHTERS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES ON 9/11.
