COMMON, IT’S A SPECIAL MEMORIAL CALLED THE FIELD OF HONOR..A WAY FOR THE COMMUNITY TO COME TOGETHER TO HONOR THE HEROES IN THEIR LIFE. W-N-C-T’S EMILY GIBBS JOINS US LIVE FROM THE TOWN COMMON WITH MORE. EMILY? SHAYLA…I SPENT THE DAY OUT HERE WHERE VOLUNTEERS CAME AND INSERTED THE POLES AND THEN EACH INDIVIDUAL FLAGS. WITH TEAMWORK, THE FIELD OF HONOR IS NOW IN PLACE WITH 500 SEPARATE MEMORIALS. THE TOWN COMMON CAN NOW BE CALLED ONE OF THE MOST PATRIOTIC SPOTS IN GREENVILLE..ADORNED WITH 500 AMERICAN FLAGS. “its interesting that our first thought was this is an opportunity perhaps to honor veterans who have passed away as you would on Memorial Day but clearly this iust for anyone who is a hero. It could be teacher or a parent or a doctor.” IT STARTED AS A FUNDRAISER FOR GREENVILLE’S NOON ROTARY CLUB, BUT TOOK THE COMMUNITY BY STORM..EVERYONE READY TO HELP MAKE GREENVILLE’S TOWN COMMON RED, WHITE AND BLUE. EACH FLAG COSTS $35.AND COMES WITH A DEDICATION NOTECARD. “We really didn’t know if this was going to be a success or not, but it’s clearly turning into a huge success. There is a lot of interest among the whole community, so we would like this to be an annual event, so you should see us back here next year.” VOLUNTEERS CAME UP TODAY TO SET UP THE POLES AND THEN FLAGS. THEY WILL STAY IN PLACE UNTIL JULY 7TH. “Even after the opening ceremony, the community is welcome to come here 24 hours a day and just roam around the flags. And of course, they are welcome to read everyone’s dedication.” AT NIGHT, THE FLAGS WILL BE LIT UP..THANKS TO GREENVILLE UTILITY COMPANY.INSTALLING LIGHT POSTS AROUND THE PERIMETER. “The city was critical and Greenville recreation and Parks was a huge part of this.” YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO PURCHASE A FLAG.
