Portsmouth Humane Society will no longer categorize dogs by breed

INCREASE ITS NUMBER OF ADOPTIONS. (TOM) THE PORTSMOUTH HUMANE SOCIETY HAS STOPPED CATEGORIZING ITS DOGS — BY BREED. AS 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S ERIN KELLY FOUND OUT — THEY WANT POTENTIAL ADOPTERS TO LOOK AT THE DOGS — FOR WHO THEY ARE — NOT WHAT THEY’RE LABELED AS. (ERIN) (ERIN KELLY/PORTSMOUTH) “STARTING JULY 1ST, THE KENNELS HERE AT THE SHELTER DON’T HAVE BREEDS ON THEM. SO FOR BELLA, HERS WILL SAY, “AMERICAN SHELTER DOG.” THEY COME IN DIFFERENT SIZES… DOG CRYING MAKE DIFERENT SOUNDS… DOG BARKING DOG YAWNING BUT TO THE STAFF HERE AT THE PORTSMOUTH HUMANE SOCIETY — ALL OF THESE DOGS ARE THE SAME TYPE — THEY’RE AMERICAN SHELTER DOGS. JAMES MCLAUGHLIN SAYS THE SHELTER IS DOING AWAY WITH CATEGORIZING THE PETS BY BREED. (JAMES MCLAUGHLIN/PORTSMOUTH HUMANE SOCIETY) “WHEN IT COMES TO LABELING THE DOGS, IT CAN ACTUALLY IMPACT THEIR ADOPTABILITY, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT A BULLY BREED” “A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL LOOK AT A BREED AND LABEL TO BE GOOD AT THIS, AND THE REALITY IS THAT THESE ARE DOGS THAT HAVE BEEN MIXED. THEY’RE NOT PUREBRED, AND TO JUDGE THEM BASED ON JUST A QUICK GLIMPSE, WE’RE TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO FOCUS ON THE DOG AS AN INDIVIDUAL.” ON ALL OF THE KENNELS, IN PLACE OF A BREED, A RIBBON READS JUST THAT. ERIN KELLY – “WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SAY TO PEOPLE AT HOME WHO ARE GOING TO BE TELLING YOU, ‘I WANT TO KNOW WHAT I’M GETTING, DO OUR BEST TO MAKE A GUESS, IF THEY REALLY WANT US TO MAKE A GUESS, BUT THE ONLY WAY TO BE SURE IS IF THEY, WHETHER THROUGH THEIR VET OR THROUGH ONE OF THESE SERVICES OUT THERE GET A DNA TEST.” BUT THAT, MCLAUGHLIN SAYS, IS TOO EXPENSIVE FOR A SHELTER TO DO ON EACH DOG. ERIN KELLY – “DO YOU KNOW WHAT KIND OF BREED HE IS?” IVY TATUM – “HE’S PORTSMOUTH HUMANE SOCIETY 13 YEARS AGO. WE ASKED HIS OWNER IVY TATUM WHAT HE THOUGHT OF THE NEW POLICY… (IVY TATUM/DOG OWNER) “I THINK IT’S GREAT BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE GO TO A SHELTER LOOKING FOR A COMPANION, NOT FOR A PARTICULAR BREED, SO THEY’RE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO ADOPT TO TAKE HOME.” (ERIN KELLY/PORTSMOUTH) “THE PORTSMOUTH HUMANE SOCIETY SAYS THEY ARE THE SECOND SHELTER TO IMPLEMENT THIS POLICY IN VIRGINIA. IN PORTSMOUTH, ERIN KELLY, 10 ON YOUR SIDE.” (TOM) SO WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE IDEA? YOU CAN WEIGH IN AT OUR POLL ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE
