Protesters continue push for ban on private prisons in RI

BEEN SET YET. (MM) NOW TO NEW DEVELOPMENTS … ON THE STATE OF THE WYATT DETENTION FACILITY. TONIGHT THE BOARD ELECTED A NEW CHAIRMAN AND VOTED TO CONTINUE HOUSING UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS DETAINED BY ICE — ONE OF THE REASONS WHY PROTESTERS ARE INSISTING THE WYATT BE SHUT DOWN. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER SHIINA LOSCIUTO WAS AT TONIGHT’S MEETING AND JOINS US NOW FROM CENTRAL FALLS WITH THE LATEST. SHIINA? (SL) THESE MEETINGS CAN GET HEATED- WE SAW AT LEAST TEN POLICE OFFICERS DETAILING THIS MEETING HERE TONIGHT- BOTH FROM CENTRAL FALLS AND STATE POLICE. WHILE EVERYTHING STAYED PEACEFUL- PROTESTORS SAY THEY ARE OUTRAGED. “The Wyatt Detention facility is a non profit public facility created by statue.” THEY HELD THIS SIGN FOR THE ENTIRE MEETING… AND WHEN THE WYATT BOARD OF DIRECTORS WENT TO VOTE- THEY ALL TURNED AROUND…EVENTUALLY MARCHING OUT. THIS IS THE GROUP “NEVER AGAIN ACTION RHODE ISLAND”- THEYVE DEMONSTRATED HERE MANY TIMES BEFORE…PROTESTING THE WYATTS CONTRACT WITH ICE. “You can drive your trucks into us. You can attack us with pepper spray, you can send us to the hospital, doesn’t matter, we’re coming back.” THE FACILITY’S BOARD APPROVED THE FORBEARANCE AGREEMENT WITH THEIR BOND HOLDERS. BY DOING GO- THEY AGREED TO KEEP ANY FEDERAL CONTRACTS THAT ALREADY EXIST- INCLUDING THE AGREEMENT TO HOUSE ICE DETAINEES. JAMES LOMBARDI WAS ALSO VOTED IN AS THE BOARDS NEW CHAIR. “This board is made up of people who are responsible for the community, and deeply care about all the detainees that are housed in this facility.” LOMBARDI ADDRESSED THE CROWD- SAYING HE’S TOURED THE FACILITY- AND ASSURES PEOPLE- DETAINEES ARE RECEIVING PROPER CARE AND RESOURCES. HE ALSO SAYS- THEY HAVE IDEAS ON HOW TO POTENTIALLY RESTRUCTURE THE WYATT- BUT IT STARTS WITH PAYING OFF THE BONDHOLDERS. “There’s nothing we can do to change federal immigration policy or the federal court order we are subject to.” “This is not acting in the interest of the people. If you vote this way today, you are acting in the interest of capital.” (SL) AT LAST CHECK- THERE WERE ABOUT 160 ICE DETAINEES HERE AT THE WYATT DETENTION CENTER. IN CENTRAL FALLS I’M SHIINA
