Report: Child welfare system in Yolo County is outdated

WALTER: YOLO COUNTY WILL
CONTINUE TO BE BLINDSIDED BY
REPORTS OF SUDDEN CRISES
INVOLVING ABUSED OR NEGLECTED
CHILDREN. THAT’S THE FINDINGS OF A GRAND
JURY REPORT RELEASED TODAY.>>THE CHILD WELFARE SYSTEM IS A
VERY COMPLICATED SYSTEM. WALTER: BOARD OF COUNTY
SUPERVISORS CHAIR OSCAR VILLEGAS
SAYS THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THE
AGENCIES DEFICIENCIES.>>WE’VE ALREADY BEGUN SPENDING
A LOT MORE MONEY ON SUPERVISED
VISITATION. THAT’S WHEN PARENTS ARE
SUPERVISED WHILE THEY’RE WITH
THEIR KIDS IN AN ENVIRONMENT
THAT’S STRUCTURED. WALTER: THE REPORT SAYS THAT
DESPITE ADDING A NEW DIRECTOR TO
THE AGENCY AND INCREASING THE
NUMBER OF SOCIAL WORKERS TO ITS
STAFF, SIX MORE YOLO COUNTY
CHILDREN HAVE DIED AT THE HANDS OF THEIR PARENTS SINCE 2015. INCLUDING THE HIGH PROFILED CASE
OF THREE WEST SACRAMENTO
SIBLINGS WHO WERE STRANGLED TO
DEATH BY THEIR FATHER ROBERT
HODGES IN SEPTEMBER OF LAST
YEAR. YOLO COUNTY’S HEALTH AND HUMAN
SERVICES BRANCH DIRECTOR
RESPONDED WITH THIS, WHILE I
AGREE WITH THE FINDINGS AND
RECOMMENDATIONS, CITING THE
TRAGIC FATALITIES THAT WERE IN THE MEDIA THIS PAST YEAR MAY NOT
REPRESENT THE WORK OF YOLO
COUNTY CHILD WELFARE SERVICES AS
WE CAN ONLY RESPOND TO
INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS OF ABUSE
AND NEGLECT FOR CHILDREN WHO COME TO OUR ATTENTION. THE REPORT WENT ON TO RECOMMEND
THE AGENCY CREATE AN UPDATED
WEBSITE DASHBOARD THAT WILL HELP
SOCIAL WORKERS TARGET WHICH
FAMILIES REQUIRE SPECIAL
ATTENTION TO AVOID CHILDREN BEING HURT IN THEIR HOMES. THE NEW RECOMMENDED SYSTEM WOULD
REPORTEDLY TAKE ONLY 10% OF THE
TIME THE CURRENT OUTDATED SYSTEM
TAKES SOCIAL WORKERS TO COMPLETE
THE SAME JOB, MAKING I
DRAMATICALLY MORE EFFICIENT.>>BUT THE REALITY IS, THAT
TAKES ADDITIONAL RESOURCES, SO
IT DOESN’T COME FOR F
