Sec Carson Remarks Spartanburg

Hi, I’m Ben Carson, and on behalf of HUD,
I’d like to express my gratitude for the wonderful work that the Spartanburg Housing
Authority does to help provide quality, affordable housing to so many South Carolinians. It’s also a delight to wish you a fantastic
80th anniversary! There are no shortcuts to institutions that
excel for 80 years – they’re built with that same enduring spirit in which so many
Americans care for their homes: to last for generations, and to pass on to loved ones. Local public housing authorities like Spartanburg
are on the front lines of our country’s fight to secure a brighter future for all
Americans – which is a process that starts right in the home. Quality housing is not just about putting
roofs over peoples’ heads – it’s also about bringing out the best version of the
people and families who live inside them. HUD values your hard work to administer programs
that promote self-sufficiency, so the citizens of Spartanburg who rely on public housing
can take greater control of their own destinies and financial futures. That is what economic opportunity is really
all about. Every day, HUD is working to find new ways
to help you better meet the needs of the families you serve. For example, just last month, HUD announced
that we will be significantly expanding our Rental Assistance Demonstration – or “RAD”
– program, to facilitate capital investments in senior housing developments assisted through
HUD’s Section 202 Project Rental Assistance Contracts. This expansion will preserve and improve critically
needed affordable housing for low-income seniors. And, thanks to the work of President Trump’s
White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, we continue to add more and more
incentives for private sector investment in Opportunity Zones – four of which are located
in the City of Spartanburg. There are so many exciting developments happening
in American housing. And HUD could not serve the millions of American
families who count on us without counting on places like the Spartanburg Housing Authority
to be there on the ground, in the community, helping our fellow citizens first-hand. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. And again, I’d like to express my congratulations
for going 80 years strong. Let’s do all in our power to make the next
80 years even stronger
