  1. This is one of those things you figure civilizations have figured out independently over and over again throughout the centuries. And since predicting eclipses has some religious significance, the ability to track and predict these were most likely closely guarded secrets and thus easily lost.

  2. A common phenomenon throughout history, that technical skills are restricted to a small segment of the population and prone to loss during major catastrophes. However, they are easily (relatively) re-discovered, because they are practical in nature especially in agrarian societies. The ancient aliens crowd should have more faith in the human race.
