What’s the difference between public, unlisted and private videos? Green Spark Vlog Episode 08

when you upload a video to YouTube do you make it public private or unlisted if you don’t know the difference keep watching hi i’m jim from grace park when you upload a video to YouTube there are a few different options about how visible you want to make your video the first one which is always the default option is public now as the name suggests this is the most visible of the options and it basically means that anyone can see your video if you put a description and a title and tanks then people can find your video in the search results they can watch it they can put on social media they can embed it on their website and everyone can see the video it also sends a message to your subscribers that your video is now online and they can watch it if you choose the next one down unlisted then actually is not that much different in terms of visibility everyone can still see it and it can still be embedded on websites and shared over social media and email between people but it won’t show up in any search results so the only people who are gonna see that video of people who’ve got a link to it somehow or watching on an embedded site the final option is private now private videos can only be seen by the people that you specify you have to actually type in the youtube user accounts of the people who you want to be able to see the video so privates a great option if you want to send your video around to a small group of people who you want to be able to see it and no one else it won’t show up in any search results and it won’t be visible if those people pass it on to anyone else now you can actually change the visibility of your video after it’s been uploaded and that means sometimes it’s a good idea to start it off unlisted or private while you’re adding a title description tags may be uploading a customized thumbnail when it’s really ready for youtube then you can make it public and then the notification will go out to your subscribers and everyone will be able to see your video as you intended to be thanks very much for watching I’ll see you again next time we make one of these videos every Wednesday so if you want to make sure you never miss out on any then hit that subscribe button up there and in the meantime there’s a couple of videos over here that you might want to look at if you have any questions about YouTube video production and video marketing in general then leave them in the comments below this video and who knows maybe we’ll make a video about it

  1. I wanna send my private video to someone but I don't want him to download it and share it … so in private can he share it or download it?

  2. Ok, I just did an experiment that made me a little nervous. Say I share a link to an unlisted video with someone. It looks like if that person then "Likes" it (and their setting allow others to see what they liked) then the video is potential view-able. I haven't tried the same experiment for Private videos.

  3. Hi. I have a question. If I embed an unlisted link in an email and later on I change the video to public, will the unlisted link still be functional? (I noticed the unlisted link looks different, with a dot in it like so: youtu.be.) Thanks
