TO MAKE SURE OUR RICH HISTORY ISN’T LOST… PEOPLE AT THE WISCONSIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY ARE WORKING TO PRESERVE OUR STORIES. HERE WITH A LOOK AT THE PROCESS AND HOW YOU AT HOME CAN MAKE USE OF THESE RESOURCES… IS ANDY KRAUSHAAR… THE VISUAL MATERIALS CURATOR… LET’S START WITH THE OBVIOUS QUESTION… WHERE DO YOU GET THE INFO THAT YOU ARCHIVE? ((ANDY ANSWERS)) THE VISUAL MATERIAL ARCHIVES IS PART OF THE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES DIVISION OF THE WISCONSIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY. A LARGE PART OF OUR DAY TO DAY ACTIVITIES INCLUDES ADDING MATERIAL TO THE COLLECTION AND MAKING IT AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC FOR BOTH IN-PERSON VIEWING AS WELL AS ONLINE BROWSING. THE COLLECTION HAS APPROXIMATELY 3 MILLION IMAGES IN MORE THAN 6,000 COLLECTIONS. MATERIALS INCLUDE PHOTOGRAPHS, NEGATIVES, FILMS, ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS, CARTOONS, LITHOGRAPHS, POSTERS, AND EPHEMERAL MATERIALS FROM PRIVATE, BUSINESS, AND GOVERNMENTAL SOURCES. THE MATERIAL DOCUMENTS THE RICH SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND POLITICAL HISTORY OF WISCONSIN AND THE UPPER MIDWEST FROM THE MID-1800S TO THE PRESENT, AS WELL AS THOSE ETHNIC GROUPS WHO HELPED SHAPE ITS HISTORY. IMAGE HOLDINGS ARE PARTICULARLY STRONG IN DAILY LIFE FROM THE TURN OF THE CENTURY TO THE 1970S. HOW EASY IS IT TO ACCESS ALL OF THESE MATERIALS? ((ANDY ANSWERS)) WE NOW HAVE OVER 90,000 IMAGES AVAILABLE ONLINE THROUGH A DATABASE SEARCHABLE BY NAME, OR SUBJECT MATTER. EVERY MONTH WE ALSO PUT UP A NEW GALLERY OF IMAGES ORGANIZED BY PHOTOGRAPHER OR SUBJECT WITH A BRIEF NARRATIVE DESCRIBING THE COLLECTION. WE NOW HAVE OVER 100 UNIQUE GALLERIES. HMI VOLUNTEERS- PHOTOCOPY SERVICE AND ARTHUR VINJE: EXAMPLE OF A GALLERY MUCH OF THE DIGITIZATION AND CATALOGING WORK WE DO IS CARRIED OUT BY VOLUNTEERS AND STUDENTS. I’D LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT THE WORK OF THE HISTORIC MADISON INC. VOLUNTEER GROUP AS AN EXAMPLE. IN 2002, WHEN WE FIRST BEGAN TO DIGITIZE THE COLLECTIONS, HMI BEGAN TO CATALOG THE COLLECTION OF MADISON PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BETWEEN THE 1920S AND THE 1960S BY TWO COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHERS, ANGUS MCVICAR AND GEORGE STEIN. THE SUBJECTS COVERED IN THE PHOTO COPY SERVICE COLLECTION ARE VARIED DUE TO THE RANGE OF CLIENTS THEY SERVED, INCLUDING NEWSPAPERS, SMALL BUSINESSES, INSURANCE COMPANIES, AUTO DEALERSHIPS, SORORITIES AND FRATERNITIES, AND PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS. THERE ARE NOW 11,000 IMAGES CATALOGED. ((ANDY ANSWERS)) THEIR CURRENT PROJECT INVOLVES RESEARCHING, CATALOGING, AND DIGITIZING THE WORK OF ARTHUR VINJE, THE WISCONSIN JOURNAL’S FIRST PHOTOGRAPHER WHO DOCUMENTED THE CITY FOR THE NEWSPAPER FROM 1914 TO 1962.
